Information & Assistance

The Lafayette Council on Aging Senior Centers serve as community focal points through which older persons receive supportive services as well as participate in monthly planned activities for socialization, recreation, education and health maintenance. The Senior Centers are located in Broussard, Carencro, Lafayette, Youngsville and Scott.

Congregate and home-delivered meals

The Lafayette Council on Aging has five CONGREGATE MEALS SITES in the Parish of Lafayette located in Lafayette, Carencro, Scott, Youngsville and Broussard. HOME DELIVERED MEALS are provided to homebound persons who are in need of this service. The drivers relay information about any additional services which the homebound clients may need.

Homemaking

Homemaker aides are dispatched each day according to a regular schedule to render light housekeeping, chore services and personal services. The degree of need establishes a priority. The greatest need is served first.

Transportation

The LCOA Transportation Service Is provided to transport participants to and from congregate meals sites, medical appointments, grocery and personal needs.

Training and Employment

The Lafayette Council on Aging receives federal funds to operate a senior employment and training program. In order to qualify for employment, persons must comply with the age and income guidelines. The goal of the program is to train persons for placement in paid positions in the community.

Project Care - Utility Assistance

The Council on Aging provides utility assistance through the various utility companies and FEMA(Federal Emergency Management Agency). In addition to helping eligible clients with their utility bills, the LCOA provides fans or heaters in order to maintain a liveable environment for the senior citizen.

Acadian on Call - Personal Emergency Response System

Personal emergency response system is designed to put frail, elderly and disabled individuals in 24 hour contact with personnel who are trained in handling emergencies. The console is easily installed in the client’s home. The client wears a report transmitter that has a help button.

Case Management

Through Case Management, the needs of a person are assessed and a plan is formulated to meet those needs. Case Managers also make regular checks to ensure that the client’s needs are being met.

The Foster Grandparent Program

The Foster Grandparent Program meets both the needs of the elderly and the children in the Acadiana area. The goals enable low income persons aged 60 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem through continued participation in needed community services. The program enables children with either exceptional or special needs to achieve improved physical, mental, emotional and social development with the assistance of the Foster Grandparent Volunteer.

Les Bons Jours Newspaper

The Les Bons Jours Newspaper is a monthly newspaper that is distributed through the mail and is available at newsstands throughout the city. The newspaper serves as a harbinger of news and information that may affect the daily lives of older residents of
Lafayette Parish.
